In the 8th century Reformer & Philosopher and Greatest Divine Sage  Jagad Guru Adi Shankaracharya (Adi Sankara) constructed a magnificent temple in Badrinath dedicated to Shree Narayana (Lord Vishnu), one of the most important pilgrimage sites in India. Since then The Char Dham Yatra started. It is believed that one should complete the Char Dham Yatra in a clockwise direction. Hence, the pilgrimage starts from Yamunotri, proceeds towards Gangotri, onto Kedarnath, and finally ends at Badrinath. The journey can be completed by road or by Air (Helicopter services are available). The Char Dhams are dedicated to Gods & Goddess mentioned below :

 

❖ Yamunotri - Highly revered as the origin of the majestic river Yamuna - the temple is devoted to the Goddess Yamuna and the holy thermal springs at Janki Chatti.
 

❖ Gangotri - It is the highest temple dedicated to Goddess Ganga. The holy River Ganges originates from the Gangotri glacier, located here, and is called Bhagirathi.
 

❖ Kedarnath - Adobe of Mahadeva (Lord Shiva). Originally Pandavas built The Kedarnath Temple to worship Mahadev and lately the temple was built by Jagad Guru Adi Shankaracharya

 

❖ Badrinath - Badrinath or Badrinarayana Temple is a Hindu temple dedicated to Vishnu and constructed by Jagad Guru Adi Shankaracharya

Hindu must go on this pilgrimage at least once in his lifetime. This is because it is believed that Chardham Yatra opens the gates of salvation by washing away the sins of a lifetime. It is said that when a pilgrim finishes the Chardham Yatra, he attains absolute peace of mind.
